About Carmen
Hello! I'm Carmen, a UX designer with five years' experience in creative design in the advertising, ecommerce and gaming industries. UX lies at the intersection of everything I love—visual design, storytelling, language, an endless curiosity about what makes us human, and the desire to do meaningful work.
I've always loved storytelling and fictional worlds. They let me escape the real-life grind of homework and sparked my early love for drawing and visual art. But more than that, they also fed my sense of wonder and curiosity. In these worlds, I befriended heroes, travelled to faraway lands, and fought noble battles. I was particularly fascinated with video games as an interactive, immersive storytelling medium, despite my mother's strong (and thinly-veiled) disapproval.
That love for art and storytelling brought me to the Savannah College of Art and Design, where I studied illustration. Our world often regards art and artists as “non-essential,” but it was at SCAD that I learnt how vital art (in all forms) is to humanity.
After graduation, I spent five years creating visuals for brands, ad campaigns, and editorials. It was creative and challenging work, but rarely fulfilling. It felt disconnected from the people it was meant to serve.
That’s when I found UX design.
Suddenly, I wasn’t designing at people, hoping it influenced their behaviour—I was designing with them in mind. Through research and real conversations, I could understand real needs, then shape thoughtful, inclusive solutions. It gave my work the meaning I had been missing.
Now, I get to do work that blends art, design, and humanity. It’s not always glamorous, but it’s always meaningful to me.
Outside of work, you can find me hanging out with my cats or playing video games. (I'm allowed to play video games now!)
